One tone, many voices, until your ear knows it

Your brain learns a sound by meeting it many times, not once. Pick a tone and press play: the same word, said by one Thai voice after another. Your ear stops hearing one person and starts hearing the tone itself, the part every voice shares. Say it after each one, and the sound sticks to your own mouth too.

A few minutes, often, beats one long session. Before long a tone stops being something you work out and becomes something you simply hear.

Thai has five tones, and now you can see them. Every sound spelling in the course is coloured syllable by syllable: green for mid, blue for low, purple for falling, orange for high and red for rising. The tone line beside each word wears the same colour.

Learning Thai with Kruu Jaidee

Can I learn Thai with an app?

You can learn to understand and speak everyday Thai with one, if it lets you hear every word and gives you feedback on your tones. Kruu Jaidee does both: every word is spoken, the Tone Trainer draws your pitch as you say it, and you can talk through a lesson with Kruu Jaidee out loud.

How long does it take to learn Thai?

Longer than French or Spanish. The US Foreign Service Institute puts Thai among the languages that take an English speaker about 1,100 hours of classes to reach working proficiency. Basic, polite conversation comes much sooner: a few weeks of steady practice gets you greetings, numbers, food and directions.

Do I need to read Thai script?

No. Every word shows the Thai, a sound spelling coloured by its tones that you can switch off when you are ready, its meaning and a line for each syllable's tone.

Is Kruu Jaidee a real person?

No. Kruu Jaidee is an AI teacher, and says so. The voices in the listening practice are real Thai speakers.

What is Your Thai %?

It is how much everyday Thai you know. It grows only when you recall something: in a lesson’s Recall, in its exercises, or by using a course word correctly in Just Talk with Translation off. Practising alone never moves it.

What is Just Talk?

A conversation in Thai, out loud, at your level and on a topic you pick. Stuck? Tap Help me reply. At the end you get a full report, and every course word you use correctly goes into your Thai %.

What is Level up?

A chat with Kruu Jaidee about anything you like. Each chat adds the new course words you use correctly to your Thai %, so it grows chat by chat. No single chat decides your level.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in the browser on any phone, and you can add it to your Home Screen. Apps for iPhone and Android are coming soon. There is also an app for Macs with Apple silicon.
